Boris Pankin, the Soviet ambassador to Czechoslovakia, was the only envoy to protest the coup publicly. Last week Mikhail Gorbachev rewarded him by naming him the new Soviet foreign minister.

Boris Yeltsin is reviving some of Russia’s prerevolutionary traditions. He scrapped the republic’s Communist flag for the Russian tricolor, and said he may bring back the two-headed eagle-without the crown.

Two young TV journalists, Tatyana Mitkova and Dmitry Kiselyov, were suddenly installed as anchors of the main evening news show,long knownas “Vremya” (Time). It was hastily rechristened “TV-Inform.”
