Recently, LEGO has announced that it is releasing an Optimus Prime LEGO set based on the character from Transformers. Usually, Traveller’s Tales does not craft a LEGO game around an IP unless that series has LEGO sets already based on it. Now that LEGO is dipping its toes in the Transformers universe, it means it may be fair game for a full-fledged LEGO title based on the transforming aliens. This would serve as a brand-new IP for Traveller’s Tales and may be just what Transformers needs.

Transformers Has Had an Interesting History With Video Games
Over the years, there have been countless video games based on the Transformers franchise. Many of them have been based on Michael Bay’s series of live action films, and some have served as standalone experiences. While they have been decent experiences for fans, seldom have they let players run wild as the giant robots. Currently, the most popular games based on Transformers has been Activision’s Cybertron series, but those titles has since been delisted due to licenses expiring and a new entry in the series has not come out since 2014.
Transformers: Devastation served as the last Transformers game from Activision, but that came out back in 2015 and has also been delisted due to licensing issues. A majority of the Transformers games from Activision suffered the same fate of being delisted, and that has left Transformers fans with not a lot of options. Unless they own the physical copies they cannot play the entire Cybertron series or Devastation. The only big Transformers title that has released since then is a tactical warfare game known as Transformers: Battlegrounds, which is a far cry from previous titles in the franchise. Other than that, Transformers fans can check out loads of mobile titles based on the franchise.
While the Transformers games were never critically acclaimed, they did offer a lot of fun for fans of the franchise. However, fans have to mostly turn to mobile platforms if they want to get their Transformers fix. Games like Transformers: Earth Wars, Transformers: Forged to Fight, and AB Transformers are all free-to-play titles that simply require downloading them from the app store. These titles are nothing like the older games, but they are pretty much the only option for Transformers fans unless they want to play some Battlegrounds or track down physical discs.
LEGO Transformers Could Fix That
The Transformers franchise is in desperate need of a new full-fledged video game and a LEGO Transformers title may be able to offer that. If the upcoming Optimus Prime LEGO set is a success, then LEGO will most likely make even more Transformers based LEGO sets. If those continue to sell well and garner a big enough fanbase, then Traveller’s Tales may even want to consider making a Transformers title with its LEGO formula. Tossing the transforming aliens into a game similar to LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga or LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 would go a long way to giving fans what they want.
LEGO Transformers could take cues from previous Transformers games and offer explorable areas based on Cybertron as well as various Earth locations. With the upcoming Transformers: Rise of The Beasts, it would be a perfect time for Traveller’s Tales to make a game based on the Transformers films. Many fans may prefer if it creates its own unique story in the Transformers universe, and Traveller’s Tales has shown it is very capable of crafting brand-new stories in pre-established IPs. The title could also adapt the iconic animated show that started it all, The Transformers. There are years of story telling possibilities for the game, Traveller’s Tales just has to choose what kind of story it wants to tell.
Transformers has not received many non-mobile titles since 2015, and the majority of the best reviewed titles are no longer purchasable. Now, fans can only turn to mobile games for content, but a LEGO Transformers game could fix that. It would not only give Transformers fans something to play, but it would also let Traveller’s Tales stretch its legs and try out a whole new franchise; It might be exactly what the LEGO games need.
