The company created a post on the OnePlus Forums showing off a new device called the OnePlus 8T Concept that features a color-changing back panel.
Check Out the OnePlus 8T Concept
The OnePlus 8T Concept uses a technology called Electronic Color, Material, and Finish (ECMF) with a color-changing film. With this technology, metal ions vary under different voltages, so when the metal oxide activates, the color of the glass changes from gray to blue.
The technology also uses mmWave to transmit and receives electromagnetic waves, which is how it can read information from the user and change colors at certain times.
While a color-changing phone is cool, OnePlus actually broke down some possible ways this technology could be useful. The phone could be used to provide touchless notifications. It could flash colors for an incoming call, and users could accept or reject the call with a gesture.
The tech could also use mmWave technology to monitor a user’s breathing and change colors in sync, effectively making the phone a biofeedback device.
Too Bad It’s Just a Concept
Unfortunately, this is just a concept phone, so we may never see the technology used in a publicly available device. But you never know, OnePlus might decide to release a phone with it, and that could be awesome.
