To complete the Distress Signal side quest in The Outer Worlds, the protagonist must travel to Roseway, recover three corporate secrets, and return them to Gladys in exchange for covering the cost of the Monarch’s Nav Key. This guide covers where and how to find the corporate secrets at Roseway and what the Captain of the Unreliable can choose to do with them.

The Captain of the Unreliable will arrive at the Roseway Landing Pad to discover fresh corpses. After a short jaunt West from the Landing Pad the protagonist will discover the Roseway settlement. The scientists residing there had been experimenting on wild Raptidons which managed to get loose and now the two Roseway laboratories where the corporate secrets may be found are infested with both Outlaws and ravenous Raptidons alike.

The protagonist must speak with three scientists—Orson Shaw, Vaughn Cortes, and Anton Crane—to learn the nature and exact location of their experimental research. It should be noted that upon recovering this research, the Captain of the Unreliable may choose to either sell it to Gladys or return it to the three scientists. In any case, returning to Gladys aboard the Groundbreaker will complete the quest and the Monarch Nav Key will still be available for purchase.

Vulcan’s Hammer

Orson has been working on schematics for a powerful new pistol. The schematics can be found in the storage facility on the middle-right side of the map, directly south of the Roseway Landing Pad.

All the protagonist has to do is dispatch with the marauders inside, remove a key card from one of their corpses, and go into the locked room downstairs. Anton’s pistol schematics will be hanging on the wall above the bench in the center of the room and can be sold to Gladys for a good price.

Note: The Acid Steeper required to unlock SAM as a companion can also be found here.

Doom That Came to Roseway

Anton asks the Captain of the Unreliable to recover research data from his safe in the Covert Lab south southwest of the storage facility where Orson’s pistol schematics were. Upon clearing out the area, the protagonist will find Cassandra O’Malley, the head of the Outlaws, has stolen the Anton’s research and is trapped in a room accessible only by key card.

She will forfeit the research if the Captain of the Unreliable can secure her a safe exit either by printing a key card from Chief Porter’s office and clearing out the loading dock or by convincing Chief Porter with high enough dialog skills to turn over his key card and withdraw his forces.

This side quest also comes with the optional objectives of eliminating the Outlaws and dealing with the loose Raptidons inside. The simplest way to resolve these objectives is to shoot everything inside, but if the Captain should wish to avoid unnecessary bloodshed, they can scour the Covert Lab for three canisters of sedative gas.

All that is left, then, would be to sneak into the large room where the Queen Raptidon resides, place the three cannisters in their ports at the northern end of the room, and then activate the gas from the console at the southern end of the room.

Note: Anton’s research may be sold to Gladys or returned to Anton for a finder’s fee.

The Amateur Alchemist

Vaughn Cortes has been working independently on an aphrodisiac derived from Raptidon musk. He was midway through extracting said musk when the Covert Lab had to be evacuated. All the protagonist has to do then is find the console in the room at the bottom of the Covert Lab’s map.

If their science skill is high enough, the protagonist can recalibrate the experiment and retrieve the research that way. Otherwise, they have the option to simply complete the experiment or purge the research.

Note: the protagonist can choose to sell the research to Gladys, return it to Vaughn, or turn Vaughn over to Anton. Bits are received regardless.
