The Penguin will reportedly pick up several months after the events of The Batman. Near the end of the film, Mafia boss Carmine Falcone is assassinated by Paul Dano’s the Riddler, which creates a power vacuum in Gotham City’s criminal underworld. In the film, Farrell’s Penguin is Falcone’s right-hand man, so he will likely be eager to seize power in his old boss’ absence, but if Milioti’s character is even half as vicious in the series as she is in the comics, fans are in for a long and brutal fight for control of Gotham City.

As reported by Deadline, Milioti will play Sofia Falcone, the daughter of mafia boss Carmine Falcone, portrayed by John Turturro in the film. There are few details regarding the plot for the HBO Max limited series, but according to Deadline, the series will see Sofia fighting against Farrell’s Penguin for control of Gotham city. Executive produced by The Batman director Matt Reeves, the series is said to be set in the aftermath of the film and will explore the power vacuum in Gotham City’s criminal underworld.

Created by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, Sofia first appeared in the Batman comic storyline The Long Halloween, where she assists her father in discovering the identity of the Holliday killer, who is later revealed to be her own brother, Alberto Falcone. The character also appeared in the fourth season of the Fox TV series Gotham, where she was portrayed by actress Crystal Reed. She was also featured in the animated film adaptation of the Long Halloween comic book, where she was voiced by actress Laila Berzins.

Milioti is best known for her comedic roles in films such as the time-loop rom-com Palm Springs and Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf Of Wall Street. She is also known for her many roles in television, including the titular mother on How I Met Your Mother and more recently she starred in the Peacock mystery series The Resort alongside The Good Place star William Jackson Harper.

The Penguin is slated to begin production in 2023.
