“I spoke at colleges where feminism is a new, sometimes alien idea. People told me they thought you had to hate men, be left wing and pro-choice in order to be a feminist.” Her call for a broadly inclusive, politically active “power” feminism is based on listening to a lot of different women and on new data in standard sources. “Women are the majority now,” she says, “but we’re not going to get power by being nice girls.”

Wolf married recently and is eager to have a baby, but she hasn’t forgotten her early pirate dreams. She believes in indulging the “submerged, egoistic inner ‘bad girl’ who has the will to autonomy, to conquest.” Her next book project sounds deliciously taboo: it’s a cultural history of female desire.
